Cape Town's Robben Island
This historical heritage site was 'home' not only to our famous
Nelson Mandela but also to other political prisoners from as far
back as 1636.
Since the last political prisoner was released in 1991, the Robben
Island has become better known for its large seabird breeding colony.
Robben Island is very popular among tourists who wish to visit
the jail where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
A number of boat trips run daily from
Cape Town's Waterfront
